Our roof-integrated solar panels directly replace roofing tiles, acting as both a roof covering and electricity generating solution.

When John Lees, owner of JAL Roofing Ltd attended one of our Part L and Solar roofing webinars earlier this year, he realised that there was a potential for his business to benefit from solar pv.

Here, he gives his opinion on the opportunities that solar is presenting, an insight into the process of becoming MCS accredited - essential for anyone installing solar - as well as the advice, training and support he received from Marley throughout his journey. And he is urging other roofing contractors to get involved.

Marley SolarTile®

Solar panels can be installed in either portrait or landscape orientation. For simple installation of the panels there is a full suite of flashing kits which can be used to create multiple combinations of panel arrays. The industry leading 5mm panel spacing and hidden fixings give a high-end clean finish. The panels simply slide together to create a weathertight seal and roof fixing. All the flashing kits are provided in colour-coded boxes making installation very quick and simple on site. The roofing kits work with all our tiles and are compatible with slates. Fixings are also available for sarking boards if required.

Panel performance

Marley SolarTile® is the only roof-integrated solar panel system accredited with the highest resistance to spread of flame and fire penetration in all European fire safety tests, achieving BRoof T1, T2, T3 and T4. These solar PV tiles also provide excellent weather-tightness and wind resistance, without the need for extra roof batten support, adhesive flashing rolls or fireproofing materials. The certified wind resistance for Marley SolarTile® is more than four times higher than competitor products and suitable for even the most exposed locations.

Marley SolarTile® offers versatility due to its compatibility with the entire range of Marley roof coverings, including clay and concrete tiles and cedar shingles and shakes. It can be fitted in both tiled and slate roof applications and is compatible with all core roof covering products and is suitable for installation on low-pitch roofs, giving you ultimate flexibility across all projects.

MCS Certification

MCS certification covers installations of products used to produce electricity and heat from renewable sources, including solar. Although you don’t have to be certified to fit the panels, it is required to make the electrical connection and do final sign off. MCS certification demonstrates the quality of products and competence of installers in the renewable technology sector and could be an added support to help you win new business.
