What are ridge tiles?

Ridge tiles are special roof tiles that are designed to cover and protect the ridge ‘line’ of the roof. A ridge line, often referred to as just ‘the ridge’, is where two sloping roof surfaces meet at the top or ‘apex’. On simple gable to gable roofs there will be only one ridge line, but on more complex roof shapes there can be several.

The main purpose of a ridge tile is to provide weatherproofing along this junction of the roof. In addition to their functional role, roof ridge tiles also provide an attractive finish. They come in a wide range of materials, colours and finishes to match the roof covering available in round and angled designs, some ridge tiles incorporate decorative elements such as finials or crests.

Traditionally, ridge tiles were installed using mortar bedding; however, the tensile strength of mortar can no longer be relied upon to meet the requirements of BS5534 and mortar can crack and fall out making the roof more difficult to maintain, so in most cases, dry fix methods are now specified as standard.

Dry fix systems use a combination of adhesives and mechanical fixings to attach the ridge tiles to the ridge batten, providing quick installation that's secure and compliant with BS 8612:2018 Dry-fixed Ridge, Hip and Verge Systems for Slating and Tiling -Specification.

Dry ridge systems also include built-in ventilation, helping to prevent condensation, moisture and damp in the roof space, and supporting compliance with BS 5250:2021 Management of moisture in buildings.
