The project

Coastline Housing, a social housing provider with over 5,000 properties in Cornwall, provides quality, affordable and accessible housing for the local population, including many residents who require additional support.

One of its key developments is Miners Court in Redruth. This is home to 64 flats, along with communal spaces, allowing older residents to lead independent lives surrounded with the support they require.

Originally constructed in 1984, Miners Court had plans already in place to replace the current roof in 2027, but the availability of new funding meant that the roof retrofit could be brought forward to include renewable technologies, such as solar PV.

Ben Nevitte, Deputy Head of Repair and Maintenance at Coastline Housing, was keen to collaborate with Marley on the specification and installation process at Miners Court.  “Marley’s full roof system includes the Marley SolarTile®, which is integrated with the roof tiles to provide a seamless and aesthetically pleasing finish. We did look at other systems, but Marley’s was by far the best suited. The fact that we could obtain all components from a single source – including inverters and battery storage – made the specification process very efficient. Add in the 15-year guarantee behind the system, and it made it the perfect specification choice.”

Support from Marley

Marley’s team of technical experts supported Coastline Housing through the system development. They made the specification calculations and product recommendations to ensure that there was enough solar power to support each of the 64 flats, with the final system delivering between 2.4 and 2.6 kWh to each flat, while the two communal areas deliver 46kWh and 15kWh, respectively.

As it was Coastline Housing’s first foray into using solar PV, Marley provided training support to upskill the in-house installation team. This would not only allow the team to deliver a successful project, but it would also enable team members to utilise newly acquired skills on future Coastline Housing roofing schemes.

Coastline Housing opted for many of the benefits the full roof solution offers. Ben adds: “Marley SolarTile® integrates brilliantly with Edgemere, helping to protect the roofline integrity as well as delivering guaranteed performance, whilst reducing the number of roof tiles required.”

Marley’s experts regularly visited the site to ensure the installation phases were going according to plan and that the team felt supported and could ask technical questions as they proceeded. With this guidance offered by Marley, Coastline Housing’s installation team worked to deliver in Ben’s words; “a brilliant finish”.
