Building responsibly for the future

For more than a century, Marley has adapted to the changing needs of the built environment. Today, that responsibility goes further. It means considering how we operate, how we support our customers, and how we contribute to a more sustainable and resilient future.

We are clear that this is an ongoing journey. We have made meaningful progress, but there is always more to do. Our focus remains consistent: reducing environmental impact, supporting people, and operating with transparency and integrity.

As part of the Marshalls Group, our approach aligns with the Group’s Built for the Future strategy, while remaining focused on the actions we take as Marley to deliver positive outcomes across the built environment.

Social value

We are constantly going one step further to support our local communities. From assisting local sport clubs to larger community hubs, we have donated products, expertise and sponsored initiatives to help some of the good causes closest to us.

Branston Village Hall

We donated roof tiles to support the refurbishment of Branston Village Hall, helping to secure a well-used community building for the future.

The project was led by local collaboration, with the installation carried out on a voluntary basis by roofing contractor Aidan Locke, who completed the work in his spare time across multiple weekends, applying his trade skills to ensure the roof was both durable and weather-resistant.

The finished result improves the safety of the building, which plays an important role locally, providing a shared space for residents and a daily setting for the village pre-school.

Lascelles Hall Cricket Club

We provided weatherboard to support upgrades at Lascelles Hall Cricket Club, a volunteer-run Community Interest Company that serves as a hub for local activity.

Beyond cricket, the club hosts a range of events for the wider community, from seasonal celebrations to local meetings and public services. The improvements to the clubhouse have enhanced the space, with the new cladding delivering both durability and a smart finish that reflects the club’s long-standing presence in the area.

Our support helps organisations like Lascelles Hall continue to offer accessible, well-maintained spaces for their communities.

Junior Football Clubs

We consistently contribute to a diverse range of local initiatives, helping children maintain a healthy lifestyle. These often take the form of donations to football clubs for kids. One such example, out of many, is the Winshill Vikings Under-12s, a local youth football team competing in Division 1 of the Burton Junior Football League, which we are proud to have sponsored. Since 1998, the club has played a key role in supporting young players and has been recognised as one of the area's few FA Development Clubs.

SkillBuild Roofing Finals

We were proud to support the SkillBuild 2024 Roofing Finals by providing materials for the competition, helping to create a platform for emerging roofing talent to demonstrate their skills.

Delivered by CITB and supported by NFRC, SkillBuild brings together apprentices and learners from across the UK to compete at a high standard. The 2024 finals reflected the strength of future talent in the industry, with closely contested results and consistently high-quality work.

By supporting initiatives like SkillBuild, we contribute to the development of the next generation of roofers and help promote the value of skilled trades across the wider construction sector.

Social value: beyond the product

Winter wellness

Over the winter period, we expanded our approach to safety by placing greater emphasis on mental wellbeing across the roofing community. Working with TOUGH TO TALK, we highlighted the challenges many in the industry face but do not always speak about.

Our research showed that while awareness of mental health is increasing, meaningful support is still lacking, with many roofers experiencing the effects of winter in isolation. Through the campaign, we shared guidance, encouraged peer-to-peer check-ins, and promoted access to external support where it is needed.

We also provided practical support through the distribution of winter packs, helping roofers stay prepared for cold conditions on site.

This initiative reflects our commitment to supporting the wider wellbeing of the workforce, not just the environments they work in.

Caring for our environment

Reducing our impact

We are committed to lowering the environmental impact of our operations while helping customers make more sustainable specification choices.

Our adoption of the BES 6001 framework for responsible sourcing ensures materials are selected with care. Achieving an Excellent rating across our roofing products gives specifiers confidence when designing responsibly.

Across our operations, we continue to reduce carbon emissions, improve resource efficiency, and contribute to the UK’s transition to Net Zero.

Taking action on climate change

Climate change is one of the most pressing challenges facing our industry. As a manufacturer, we recognise our responsibility to act.

Through the Marshalls Group, we are committed to the Science Based Targets initiative, aligning emissions reduction targets with what is required to limit global temperature rise. This includes a shared ambition to reach net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

At a Marley level, we are taking practical steps across our sites. For example, at our Keele facility, heat recovery systems capture and reuse energy from kilns, reducing overall consumption.

We are also a signatory to the British Ceramics programme, working alongside others in the sector to support the transition to low carbon manufacturing

The steps we take

Supporting renewable energy

We recognise the growing importance of renewable energy within the built environment.

Our Marley SolarTile® system was developed as the UK’s first fully integrated solar roof solution, designed to work seamlessly with our wider roofing system. It enables renewable energy generation without compromising performance or aesthetics.

Protecting natural resources

We are reducing reliance on natural resources through improved processes and material innovation.

This includes increasing recycled content within our concrete tiles and reusing production waste wherever possible.

We also take a responsible approach to sourcing. All timber products are sourced from PEFC certified forests, and we are recognised as a Responsible Purchaser by Timber Development UK.

At site level, initiatives such as rainwater harvesting further support resource efficiency.

Supporting biodiversity

Our responsibility extends beyond our operations to the natural environment.

Through our Fusion Forest initiative, we support tree planting for every five solar panels sold. Working with partners such as Eden Reforestation Projects and Trees for Life, this helps restore ecosystems and support local communities.

At our sites, we actively encourage biodiversity through habitat creation and conservation efforts. Our partnership with Staffordshire Wildlife Trust further strengthens this work within local communities.

Supporting people

A duty of care

We are committed to creating a safe and supportive environment for employees, customers and the wider communities we serve.

All Marley manufacturing sites are certified to ISO 45001, ensuring a structured approach to health and safety, training and continuous improvement

Safety through design

Our roofing systems are developed as complete solutions, designed to work together to ensure compatibility, performance and safety.

We support customers with technical guidance aligned to British Standards, helping ensure roofs are designed and installed correctly.

In addition, our SolarTile® range and JB Red battens have achieved third party verification under the Code for Construction Product Information. This reflects our commitment to providing clear, accurate and transparent product information that supports confident specification decisions.

Building skills and supporting communities

Supporting the future of the industry means investing in people.

We provide training for contractors, merchants and specifiers, combining practical and technical learning to improve standards and confidence. Our RIBA accredited CPDs and digital learning tools ensure knowledge is accessible.

We also work with universities and colleges to support the next generation, helping bridge the gap between education and real-world application.

As part of the Marshalls Group, we support the Group’s charity partnership with Building Heroes. This partnership focuses on helping Armed Forces service leavers, veterans and their families transition into careers in construction through training and employment opportunities.

This reflects a shared commitment to addressing the construction skills gap while supporting individuals into sustainable careers. The Group’s approach is to focus its support where it can have the greatest long-term impact, aligning charitable activity with the needs of the industry and the communities it serves.

Doing business the right way

Doing business the right way

We are committed to operating openly, fairly and responsibly.

Our governance is underpinned by clear policies, robust processes and strong oversight at Marley. This ensures accountability and consistency across all areas of the business.

All Marley manufacturing sites operate to internationally recognised standards, including ISO 9001 for quality management, ISO 14001 for environmental management and ISO 45001 for health and safety.

Our responsible sourcing approach, guided by BES 6001, ensures that sustainability is embedded throughout our supply chain.

Safeguarding human rights within the supply chain is a core part of the Marshalls Group’s approach to responsible business. The Group works to identify and manage ethical risks by mapping suppliers, assessing supply chains against the ETI Base Code, providing specialist training, and maintaining reporting routes that allow concerns to be raised and acted upon. This helps ensure vigilance against modern slavery is embedded within day-to-day decision making.

Within solar, where supply chains can be complex and multi-tiered, Marley and Viridian Solar have taken additional steps to improve traceability and assurance. This includes visiting every level of the solar cell supply chain, from panel assembly through to silica mining, and identifying producers across the first seven tiers of production. Commercial agreements are used to define approved material routes, while independent ethical audits of key suppliers assess working practices, environmental health and safety standards, and wider social accountability.

This work forms part of the Group’s wider commitment to responsible sourcing and continuous improvement. By supporting the development of international standards through the Solar Stewardship Initiative, Marley and the wider Marshalls Group are helping to raise expectations across the solar industry and provide customers with greater confidence in the provenance of the products they specify.

Transparency is central to how we operate. From verified product information through CCPI accreditation to clear environmental data such as Environmental Product Declarations, we aim to give customers the confidence to make informed decisions.

A shared commitment to progress

We are committed to making a positive difference.

That means continuing to reduce our environmental impact, supporting the people who rely on us, and maintaining high standards in how we operate.

As part of the Marshalls Group, we contribute to a broader vision for sustainable growth through the Built for the Future strategy. At the same time, our focus at Marley remains clear: delivering practical, measurable actions that support better outcomes across the built environment.
