Redefining sustainability in public sector construction

In more detail

Located in Aberdeen, the Stoneywood Care Home is setting a new standard for sustainable public sector construction. With a focus on achieving net-zero emissions, this innovative development integrates the latest renewable energy technologies to reduce its environmental footprint and operational costs.

A visionary approach to care home construction

Comprising three custom-designed buildings, the Stoneywood Care Home embraces a forward-thinking ethos. Each building features a duo-pitch roof fitted with Marley’s full roof system. Led by Ogilvie Construction, the project leverages Marley’s integrated solar PV technology to align with its ambitious sustainability targets.

Advanced roofing for a net-zero future

To meet rigorous environmental goals, the architects selected Marley’s Edgemere concrete roof tiles in Smooth Grey alongside Marley SolarTile®. This comprehensive solar roofing solution spans an impressive 2000m², ensuring efficient on-site renewable energy generation while maintaining a sleek and modern design.

“Stoneywood Care Home exemplifies how the public sector can lead in sustainable building,” says Natalie Crawford, Area Sales Manager at Marley. “By embedding solar PV technology directly into the roofing system, we’ve helped future-proof this development while eliminating any future financial and structural challenges associated with retrofitting solar panels.”

The care home will benefit from advanced features such as a Marley’s 410kW solar PV system, hybrid inverters, and battery storage, significantly lowering its reliance on external electricity. This system not only supports long-term sustainability goals but also provides substantial energy cost savings.

Overcoming challenges with collaboration

Like many major projects, the construction of Stoneywood Care Home presented unique challenges. Adverse weather conditions, including heavy snowfall, and adjustments to the placement of battery storage due to its proximity to air-source heat pumps added additional time to the project timescale.

However, the close collaboration between the installer, Marley Contract Services, and Ogilvie Construction ensured these challenges were effectively managed, keeping progress on track.

Bryan Bell, at Marley Contract Services, adds: "Working on a project of this scale with such a strong sustainability focus was an exciting challenge. The integration of Marley SolarTile® and battery storage is a game-changer for renewable energy in public sector buildings. It’s great to be part of a development that’s leading the way in net-zero construction."

Setting a benchmark in public sector sustainability

Stoneywood Care Home is more than just a care facility. It serves as an innovation in public sector development, demonstrating the key role of integrated renewable solutions in modern construction. The incorporation of solar PV and battery storage systems highlights the growing demand for sustainable energy strategies, paving the way for future advancements.

“This project showcases the value of a complete roofing system that integrates solar technology,” adds Nat. “We’re proud to have contributed to the creation of a care home that is environmentally responsible and built to the highest construction standards.”

A sustainable legacy

Stoneywood Care Home is a prime example of net-zero public sector construction. The project not only solidifies Marley’s position as a leader in sustainable roofing solutions but also sets a precedent for future developments to follow.
