When you're working on a roof all day, there are parts of your body you don’t think twice about, until they burn. Your neck, your ears, even the tops of your hands. They’re the ones
that catch the sun, and the ones we often miss.
That’s why this year we're focusing on those easy-to-forget areas. The hot spots. A few seconds with some sunscreen or a piece of clothing for cover-up can save a world of pain later. Simple stuff. But it makes a big difference.
To help protect your hot spots and keep cool this summer, we’re giving away handy clip-on SPF30 sunscreen bottles, water bottles and can cooler sleeves. Just scroll down to request yours.
1. Scalp: When not wearing your hat, your scalp can get caught out. Don’t let it fry.
2. Ears: Your ears are more exposed than you think, protect them from the burn.
3. Neck: Don’t turn your back on the sun, your neck is a hot spot for burns.
4. Nose: Your nose is front and centre, make sure it’s not first to burn.
5. Forearms: Sleeves rolled up? Your forearms are soaking up the sun.
6. Hands: Your hands take the brunt of the work, and without the gloves, the brunt of the sun as well.
Research published in Skin Health and Disease reveals that melanoma is significantly more concentrated in upper body areas, such as the face and ears, compared to the lower body. These findings highlight the reason Marley's Safe in the Sun campaign has been running for over 20 years prioritising worker health and safety.
Our Safe in the Sun campaign has run for over 20 years working to change attitudes to sun protection. South Wales-based M Camilleri & Sons Roofing Ltd has embraced evolving attitudes toward sun safety, actively supporting Marley’s ‘Safe in the Sun’ campaign. Managing Director Marco Camilleri notes that sunscreen use was rare 30 years ago, but today, awareness has grown, especially among younger roofers who are more concerned about the long-term risks of sun exposure. The company reinforces this shift through toolbox talks, sun safety posters, and practical steps like applying sunscreen, supplying suitable workwear and cold drinks plus encouraging roofers to take breaks in shaded areas. With a 55-strong workforce, M Camilleri & Sons integrates sun protection into daily routines, reflecting how the industry has moved from low awareness to a culture of proactive safety.
