Marley Helping to Make a Difference: Staffordshire Wildlife Trust

Marley is a corporate member of the Staffordshire Wildlife Trust. This article provides more information about how our membership helps to support the charity in the wonderful work they do β€œto protect and enhance the wildlife and wild places of Staffordshire.”

There are some useful resources that may be of interest to you too.

There are many aspects of the charity’s work that membership fees help to fund including:

  • looking after local wild places
  • people engagement work
  • supporting their campaigns

You can watch a video that gives an overview of the wonderful work that membership will have gone towards helping last year here:

Membership will also cover costs to manage their reserves and you can read more about any of their many reserves here.

Passionate about conservation and improvements to your local area?

Membership fees also help to fund their nature conservation projects, and one of their biggest and most exciting nature conservation projects – SUNRISE – has been developing in Stoke-on-Trent and Newcastle-under-Lyme. The project delivers improvements on areas including:

  • The Lyme Brook
  • Pool Dam Marshes
  • Bradwell Wood

The project, of which the Trust were lead partner, had the primary goal to:

  • enhance urban habitats
  • improve the connectivity between these green spaces areas to create a network of natural habitats across the project area
  • improve opportunities for local residents and communities to enjoy these area

The project came to a close in December 2020 but they are currently planning SUNRISE 2! You can find out more about the project here or watch a case study video on one of the main sub projects “Victoria Ground” here.

Something for everyone...

They also have two people engagement projects that membership will help to fund. These are:

- Children in Need GetWild project, which delivers free nature-based activities for children in the most deprived areas of Stoke-on-Trent and Newcastle-Under-Lyme. This includes face to face delivery where possible, and now virtual activities and nature-based activity packs to families in need.

-Action for Children, which provides virtual and downloadable activities for children with special educational needs and their families in Stoke-on-Trent. They also deliver these face to face when possible.

Normally, they would also be running engagement events at their Westport Lake Visitor Centre, but sadly this is currently closed due to the pandemic!

Something useful for you now...

The charity has been working to continue their people engagement work during the pandemic through their free Get Wild at Home platform, which can be accessed here; it offers a range of resources and activities to connect people with nature.

To take a few words from their page: “We need wildlife now more than ever during this difficult time” as “It has been proven that a daily dose of nature (or vitamin n as we like to call it) improves mental health and wellbeing”.

There are resources suitable for all ages on this platform.

However, they have also recently launched a Wild Winter pack that is free to download and aimed at families. Connecting with nature can be an invaluable experience with many benefits.

All of this incredible work that the charity undertakes would not be possible without the support of their members as membership fees help to fund all aspects of their work.
Marley is proud to be one of their supporters.
