We're used to changeable weather here in the UK, but during the winter months, when a cold crisp morning can become a torrential downpour by afternoon, those working on site, especially at height, can be badly affected. So, when it comes to weather, it pays to be prepared for every eventuality.

Winter has the potential to get nasty, with temperatures plummeting to below zero, heavy and persistent rainfall as well as strong winds to contend with. But for roofers, who are highly exposed on site anyway, winter can have a significant negative impact on their health, safety and wellbeing.

Here are 7 top tips to ensure you, and your colleagues are safe on site this winter.

1. KNOW THE RISKS

Ensure a full risk assessment is undertaken around working conditions and any potential hazards are identified.

2. CHECK THE WEATHER

Monitor the weather forecast daily, so any poor weather can be anticipated, planned for and necessary action taken.

3. BE SAFE, BE SEEN

It might be tempting to exchange a hi-vis for a winter coat, but the correct PPE is vital in conditions where visibility may be reduced due to the weather.

4. KEEP IN THE HEAT

Strong gloves and durable hats are recommended to keep hands and head protected and warm. For jobs where hand dexterity is required, gloves maybe inconvenient, but making effort to keep hands and fingers well-wrapped will minimise discomfort.

5. LAYER UP

Multiple layers are important to help keep warm. A base layer together with a middle, breathable layer will help insulate. While a good wind/waterproof outer layer gives added protection from the elements.

6. BEST FOOT FORWARD

In slippery, icy, or wet conditions, appropriate footwear is key. Water-resistant and robust boots or ice grips on soles are advised.

7. EAT TO HEAT

Warm food and drinks should be consumed throughout the day to keep the body's temperature up.
