Roof tile sizes how many roof tiles per square metre
Roof tile size: how many roof tiles are needed per square metre?
The number of roof tiles needed per square metre varies and can range from less than 10 for large format interlocking tiles to more than 60 for plain tiles.
Kevin Taylor, Training and Technical Support Manager at Marley, notes that roof tiles come in a vast range of shapes and sizes, and roof structures can also vary greatly, so coverage will depend on the specific project.
“Determining precisely how many roof tiles are needed for a project will require careful calculation based on all the relevant factors,” he advises.
Comparing roof tile sizes and coverage capacity
The table below can help you determine approximately how many roof tiles are needed per square metre for a project. Pantiles and interlocking tiles are usually larger than plain tiles, so fewer tiles are required.
For a rough estimate of how many tiles are needed, multiply the size of the roof (in metres squared) by the roof covering capacity (see chart below).
So, for example, the calculation for a 100m² roof covered in Marley Acme tiles would be:
100x60=6,000 tiles

Other types of tiles
When calculating how many roof tiles are needed for a project, Kevin also points out that specifiers should consider the other types of tiles and fittings that are required to complete the roof.
“For example, depending on the type of roof tiles chosen, there may hip and valley tiles, verges, angle tiles, ridges, stop ends and ventilation tiles,” he explains. These products are available in a variety of colours, materials and designs to ensure compatibility with your roof tile of choice.
